Library co-operation in Wales

Regional schemes
In Wales there is an established and growing collection of regional cross-sectoral library groupings. Linc y Gogledd (North Wales) took the lead and other regions have followed, encouraged by the establishment of CyMAL as channel for National Assembly funding for libraries (and archives / museums). There is no Wales-wide "scheme".

CyMAL
Funding from CyMAL is currently channelled through the "@ your library" programme (though libraries have also tapped into some of their other funding streams, eg "Inspiring Learning for All"). The "@ your library" programme has four strands:
  • national resource discovery
  • online public library
  • marketing to end-users
  • staff training
"@ your library" has provided funds of between £10,000 and £20,000 to most of the existing schemes and to help to start some new ones. CyMAL is also funding a range of national e-developments, including a collaborative procurement of e-resources for public libraries, which includes exploring an authentication model based on the public library card number. A "virtual library for Wales" website is also under discussion, which would bring together developments such as Ask Cymru (like Ask a Librarian but in Wales) and Wales on the Web (see http://www.walesontheweb.org/).
