Access to Libraries for Learning
The Access to Libraries for Learning in the South West scheme allows anyone, whether studying for a qualification or just for enjoyment to access the knowledge and resources stored in the 60 public, 4 university and 5 college libraries in this area.
The public libraries offer general collections and books can be borrowed. Libraries in colleges and universities have more specialised material which can help with learning and research. Visitors to the academic libraries will not usually be able to borrow these materials but many libraries have on-line catalogues and web pages so people can check what is available before they visit and when they can use the library. Staff in the public libraries will also be able to advise users about the specialisms of different libraries. For example someone interested in history, technology or languages would be able to consult a much wider range of materials than those available in public libraries.

Contact details for all the libraries, how to gain access to their resources and how the scheme works is available in the leaflet produced for the scheme with assistance from the South West Museums Libraries and Archives Council.

AULIC - Avon University Libraries in Cooperation
The university libraries of Bath, Bath Spa University College, Bristol, and UWE offer borrowing facilities to staff on a reciprocal basis. The scheme allows academic, research and academic-related staff to borrow up to five items at a time from any of these university libraries.
The AULIC institutions also collaborate to deliver the MSc at the University of Bristol. It is a practical course taught by local library practitioners.

SWERN South West England Regional Network

South West Higher Education Librarians (SWHELS)
SWHELS was established in December 2002. It was established to ensure that HE libraries in the South West would play an important advocatory role, as well as fostering collaboration within and between sectors and domains. It was recognised that the HE library's primary duty is to the parent institution and its members; this duty may override any commitment to collaboration and widening access.

South West Regional Library System (SWRLS)
SWRLS is one of the nine regional library systems in the UK and Ireland. SWRLS ensures that readers' requests, however diverse or unusual, are satisfied as quickly and comprehensively as possible. SWRLS promotes library cooperation and organises the inter-lending of library resources across the South West. This is now provided by a third party on a contractual basis. SWRLS was instrumental in the development of UnityWeb, a fast, efficient and user- friendly tool with over 10 million records.
