Brighton and Hove: The Laines: a Learning
City for Brighton Report
The 'LAINES: a Learning City for Brighton' report (http://www.semlac.org.uk/laines.html).
was published in February 2005 as a result of a research project by
Mary Nixon and supported by funding from SEMLAC. The aim was to conduct
a scoping study for the project, which included an overview of other
collaborative library projects in the UK, a survey of library users,
discussions with local libraries as to what they thought was possible,
and a technical feasibility study of the IT aspects of the proposals.
The study revealed that:
- Various collaborative schemes are already running successfully
in Brighton & Hove, but are not sufficiently well publicised to
potential users
- Most collaborative schemes offer reference access only, but
staff development is an important part of the project
- Users are chiefly concerned to have access to other libraries
for reference and borrowing. They would like to be able to return
books to the most convenient library
- They would like to be able to access collection descriptions
and catalogues online
- Those who are aware of electronic resources would like to have
access to them from any library
- FE libraries, in particular, feel they are under-resourced and
could not offer a service to external users
Inspire Surrey
The key partners are University of Surrey, Surrey Libraries, Royal
Holloway, Surrey Institute of Art and Design and three FE Colleges.
This group has established a steering group, drawn up an access agreement
based on the kitemark criteria, a simple access form for visitors
to use, information for visitors and a brief guidance booklet for
staff. Inspire Surrey is working with HATRICS and SASLIC to create
a website for all these groups. See further information on the Hampshire
and Isle of Wight news page.
