Kent and Medway sub-region - News and Events

3 June 2005
Medway
No formal Inspire projects, although the Medway Initiative, a partnership between the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ's College and Greenwich University, designed to deliver higher education in Medway will engage with public libraries in the future.

Kent Information and Library Network (KILN)
  • KILN Directory - All of the further education, higher education, and public libraries in Kent are members of KILN and have provided entries for a directory, available to members, which gives details of resources available and access agreements. A number of other organisations from the voluntary and health sectors are also members. At the moment, with the exception of the public libraries, physical access to library resources is limited, which is something KILN hopes to address.

  • KILN Passport - This is a referral system which allows any member of KILN to refer an enquiry on to a relevant partner. Essentially it's a piece of paper, available to download from the member's area of the KILN website (www.kiln.org.uk) which give details of an appointment made for a customer to visit another library. It doesn't extend the access each member allows, but it does make it more approachable and allows libraries to keep track of referrals, to identify stock gaps or strengths.

  • Electronic information audit - this is a piece of work that was funded recently by SEMLAC. We have carried out an audit of three kinds of information: catalogues, subscription databases, and "best practise" resources. We intend to draw the information together on the KILN website. The audit of subscription databases may open the route for consortium purchasing, and will help organisations decide what resources they need. The "best practise" stuff is an assortment of resources created by each organisation, ranging from training materials to customer guides, and will allow KILN members to tap into each other's skills.

KILN's next step is to hold a meeting in June to discuss the report from the audit and agree next steps, which are likely to include a move towards cross-searching of catalogues. KILN's aim is to improve member's services through collaboration and networking, so that clients and users can become more fulfilled and knowledgeable members of society (this is taken directly from our constitution), which obviously accords neatly with INSPIRE's aims. We've invited Sally Curry to our June meeting, and we hope that we'll be able to tap into and work very closely with INSPIRE.
